14 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. - James 2:14-17
What's more valuable right now than a roll of soft 2-ply quilted toilet paper??? If you've been to the grocery store as of late you might say a bottle of bleach, some Lysol wipes or other cleaning supply and to that list still others would add food. We seem to be in a time of scarcity of the things we took for granted. Things like toilet paper. The one thing that this pandemic has shown us is just how selfish we can be. Us four-no more-Katie bar the door has become somewhat of a reality, and if we're not careful, as Christians we'll give into that same fear. The fear that can lead to a mindset that says, "What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine also." Beloved, this is NOT becoming of us. It is in times of great darkness and panic that Christians have a unique opportunity to show forth the Light of Christ and the generosity of God. This is a great time to reach out and get to know our neighbors and meet any needs they may have.
I live in an apartment unit with three other homes. We were already looking out for each other but we're in each others lives now more than ever. I know my neighbor across the way has a small baby so while I was out I brought her a package of wipes. She was so thankful. This opened up an opportunity for us to talk a little more and since her church is closed and she has nowhere to go, I invited her to join me for church online this Sunday! One neighbor brought us all a four-pack of toilet paper while he was out!
Let's not allow being quarantined blind us to God answering all of those prayers we've prayed to get to know our neighbors and share the Gospel with them. Let's be salt and light and generous. We can spare more than a square.
In Christ,
Storm Knight
