Thankful in Every Season

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. - Hebrews 12:28-29

The Book of Hebrews has always been a favorite of mine. It's a wonderful balance of Old Testament hope and New Testament fulfillment which produces an endurance that is sometimes lacking in our world of extremes. The writer of Hebrews doesn't gloss over the sufferings his readers are facing but he encourages them with the whole truth of God's faithfulness in times of good and times of challenge.

Once again many work places are on lockdown, more out of an abundance of caution than anything else, but this time it's during a holiday season and that makes things a little more difficult. We're asked not to gather in large numbers with our families and Thanksgiving is all about family, football and food. Black Friday is a time when families go shopping to purchase gifts of love and to share in all that the season has to offer.

Experts have said that these restrictions may prove to be more than most people can handle, especially since this time of year is already a time of heightened mental health crisis. What are we to do? How are we to respond?

For the Christian, we need to remember the faithful character of God as displayed in Christ. We are to be available to those around us who are suffering as beacons of hope. We speak life and point to Christ as our eternal hope. While we enjoy the things of this world in the manner of life that God has granted us we do not put our hope in these things. We have a King and a Kingdom that cannot be shaken and this is the foundation of our worship and thankfulness in every season. With our eyes firmly fixed on Christ, as the writer of Hebrews encourages us to do, we can be thankful in every season as we live in reverent awe of God and His faithfulness and goodness to us all.

Happy Thanksgiving

In Christ -
